General Dosage Guidelines
It is recommended herbs be taken either an hour before or two hours after a meal. A customer may, in some cases, have an adverse reaction to taking herbs on an empty stomach (i.e. occasional gastrointestinal distress or nausea). In such cases, herbs should be taken with a small amount of food. In general, a customer that is highly sensitive to foods, herbs, and/or drugs will usually respond well to a smaller dosage, while customers that ingest foods in large amounts or tolerate herbs and drugs well will most likely require higher dosages.
Another consideration is whether the practitioner's intention is to support or to harmonize. Supporting is usually a long and gentle process, requiring the use of an herbal formula in small dosages. When harmonizing, clearing Heat and dispelling stagnation, larger doses may be more appropriate, particularly at the beginning. Again, these are general guidelines and customers' needs may differ according to their particular constitution.
